Creating a KEY & CSR for an SSL Certificate

In order to have an SSL certificate issued to you, you need to first generate a KEY and CSR. You will then need to provide the SSL certificate issuer with the CSR to obtain your SSL certificate (known as the CERT or CRT).

To Generate the Key:

  1. Log into the cPanel
  2. Click on the icon SSL / TLS Manager
  3. Under Private Keys (KEY), click on Generate, view, upload, or delete your private keys.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and under Generate a New Key, from the pull down menu, select the main domain name and click on Generate. You will be taken to a page that outputs the key. You do not need to copy/paste this. Scroll down and click on Return to SSL Manager.

To Generate the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

  1. Under Certificate Signing Request (CSR), click on Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.
  2. Fill out the required fields. Here is an example:

    Host: greengeeks.com (already prefilled)
    Country: US
    State: CA
    City: Los Angeles
    Company: GreenGeeks LLC
    Company Division: Sales
    Email: sales@greengeeks.com
    Pass Phrase: ANYTHINGYOUWANT

  3. Click on Generate. You will be taken to another page with the CSR outputted. It will look something like this:

    -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----

    -----END CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----

  4. Copy and paste the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and provide it to the SSL certificate issuer.
  5. Once you have been issued a Certificate (CERT/CRT), e-mail support@greengeeks.com with it either attached or in the body of the e-mail and our engineers will install it for you.
** Note: In order for a dedicated SSL certificate to function, you will need a dedicated IP address. For more information, please see: http://www.greengeeks.com/kb/idx.php/23/084/article/What-is-required-to-install-an-SSL-certificate-on-my-account.html
