Social media is an integral part of the Internet experience. This is seen as more than three-quarters of the population in the United States has a social profile of one kind or another. Pinterest is one of those platforms that focuses on sharing images.
Adding a Pinterest button to the website helps you create an intricate web between your content and your social presence. It helps you build a following while providing potential to reach a larger audience with every update. This is why many will add it to their marketing tools for business.
Today, I’m going to show you how to easily add a Pinterest button to the WordPress website. Not only will it help strengthen your online presence, but it gives you more content that appears on the site every time you add an image to the social hub.
What exactly is Pinterest and how do you use it?
Pinterest focuses more emphasis on sharing images rather than text-based content. While you can still add text to the graphics you upload, it’s more of an experience of delivering quality imagery. The pictures you upload are saved into folders that you assign to keep them organized.
One of the reasons why this site is growing in popularity is because of the social element. Not only are people able to browse through a multitude of images from others, but they can share them on most major social platforms as well.
The best part is that your images shared in this fashion will have a permanent connection to your account. This means it’s much harder for someone to take full credit for your upload. It also means there is a growing possibility for people to click the link to visit your site.
Users can also integrate an image feed into their websites from Pinterest. In the plugin I’m going to show you in a moment, you can display thumbnails of the graphics you upload. Anytime you add a new image, it will automatically show on your website. It gives your content a sense of continuation.
Many people will use Pinterest as a marketing platform. This is especially useful for those who sell goods, such as eCommerce. Taking images of the items you sell while being used can be engaging and potentially pique the interest of shoppers.
Adding Pinterest Buttons through a Theme
Some themes have the ability to show social media icons automatically. For example, the ColorMag theme comes equipped to cover a wide range of social sites. All that you need is the URL of the social profile and the theme will do the rest.
To see if your theme supports a button for Pinterest:
Go to the appearance section of the WordPress dashboard.
In “Themes,” click the customize button of the one you are currently using. This will load the WordPress Customizer.
Now, it’s important to note that not all theme developers will put the social icons in the same location. For example, the ColorMag theme will have an option on the left for, “Social Options.” You’ll have to explore the theme a bit to discover if it supports the ability to add icons. For ColorMag, all you would need to do is check the box for Pinterest and add the account’s URL.
Once you find the social element, if there is one available, make your selections to add your profile.
Click the “Save” button on the top left and then close the Customizer by clicking the “X” in the corner. This takes you back to the WordPress admin panel.
Unfortunately, not all themes have this ability. Some will come with pre-developed widgets you can use for the side bar. Many of these are quite simple to use and can be set up in mere moments.
To see if your theme supports social widgets:
In the appearance section of WordPress, click the option for, “Widgets.”
Look through the available elements on the left until you find one that relates to social media.
Drag it over to your sidebar and drop the widget into place.
When the settings of the widget automatically open, input the required information for Pinterest.
Click the button to save and your widget becomes active.
Adding Pinterest Through Jetpack
One of the most versatile plugins available for WordPress is Jetpack. It comes with a wide selection of modules that can boost the abilities of your website. In this instance, I’m going to show you how to add Pinterest.
To use the Jetpack plugin:
Go to the plugins area of the WordPress dashboard and click the “Add New” button on the top.
NOTE: Many installations of WordPress come with Jetpack automatically. If this is the case, skip to step 4.
Search for Jetpack in the text field on the right.
Install and activate the plugin.
Click the Jetpack tool in the left admin panel of WordPress.
Click on the settings link.
Click the “Appearance” header along the top of the settings page.
Scroll down and activate “Extra Sidebar Widgets” by flipping the switch next to it on the right.
Go to the widgets area in the appearance of WordPress.
Scroll down until you see the “Social Media Icons (Jetpack)” widget.
Drag and drop this widget into your sidebar.
When the options open, input the username of your account on Pinterest.
Click the button to save the settings.
Adding Pinterest by BestWebSoft
The next plugin I’m going to show you is far more versatile than the Jetpack plugin. In fact, Pinterest by BestWebSoft has an incredible number of useful features for adding the social site to your own. From “Pin It” buttons to displaying your boards in a widget, this tool is a nicely developed all in one.
To use the plugin:
Go to the plugins area, add a new plugin and search for, “Pinterest by BestWebSoft.”
Install and activate the plugin.
On the left, find the new option for “BWS Panel” and click the tool.
The first screen you see will be a list of available plugins by the developer. Ignore these for now and find the Pinterest function on the left. This can also be found if you scroll through the available plugins from BestWebSoft. Click the link for Pinterest to change its settings.
Configure the plugin for your site.
Settings: Input your “Pinterest user URL” of your account. This area also controls where you want to share the button. Click “Save Changes” when you’re done.
Extra Settings: Extra settings are unavailable unless you purchase the Pro version of the plugin. Otherwise, you can modify exactly what areas of the site display the button all the way down to individual posts.
Custom Code: If you know a bit of CSS, you can add your own snippets to the functionality to give it more of a unique presence.
Go to the widgets area of WordPress.
Find the “Pinterest Widget” and drag it to your sidebar.
Create a title. For example, you can put something like “My Pictures.”
Select the type of display you want from the background. This can be a simple pin, image board or entire profile.
NOTE: Board and profile have more options such as widget and thumbnail width.
When you’re done making changes, click the “Save” button.
It’s also important to note that this plugin will also include a shortcode generator in the visual editor when creating posts or pages. It works alongside other custom styles in the editor. Simply place the cursor anywhere in the content and click the “Add BWS Shortcode.” An option window will open where you can select which code to insert.
Pinterest is a great way to share pictures on the Internet while adding more power to your marketing strategy. Some will use it to give the site more of an interactive appearance. In any case, it can easily be added to WordPress to accentuate your content. Find methods that improve visitor engagement for your website and reap the benefits.
