Industry-wide WordPress Brute Force Attack

What a day…

After we came across some unusual activity on many of our servers, we pushed out an article to help our WordPress users protect their WP-Admin areas from attackers. As the day went on we started to see more of the unusual activity, but this time with tens of thousands of IP addresses. This is a very well organized, highly-distributed global attack on WordPress installations across pretty much every web hosting provider in the industry.

We strongly suggest that you change your password on your WordPress installation. Something that is very hard to guess. lower case, UPPER CASE, 1234’s and $*@#&$’s.

4 Reasons why you should be using CloudFlare

CloudFlare on GreenGeeks

Late last year we announced a partnership with CloudFlare, where we make it easy for you to enable CloudFlare on your account to take advantage of the benefits that CloudFlare offers. If you aren’t using CloudFlare on your hosting account, here’s 4 reasons why you should:

1. Increase in Site Performance

We use the best quality hardware and network available, so naturally our web hosting is already fast… but CloudFlare provides an increase in website performance through their global CDN (Content Delivery Network). When enabled, the CDN will automatically cache your static files (JavaScript, CSS, Images, etc.) on their servers located across strategic data centers around the world. When a visitor visits your website hosted with GreenGeeks, CloudFlare’s Anycast technology will load those static files from a server located nearest to the visitor and your dynamic content will load from our servers. This results in faster load times due to decreased latency between server and visitor. Through feedback from customers, we’ve seen increases of 50% or more on site performance when CloudFlare is enabled.

Do you need VPS Hosting?

We’ve been offering VPS Hosting for quite some time now. We like to give our customers options for when it comes to hosting and that’s why we offer a wide array of hosting solutions, virtual private servers being one of them. However, not a lot of customers know what a VPS is and/or how it works. I’ll try to clear that up and try to make some sense out of it for you.

VPS Hosting Pricing

So what exactly is VPS Hosting?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server and is essentially a server within a larger host server, often called a hardware node. What we’re able to do is take a server with lots of resources (CPU, Memory, Disk Space, etc) and slice it down to smaller servers through virtualization technology. The smaller servers or VPS’ look and feel the same as a dedicated server except that they are residing on hardware that is shared with other VPS’.

Choose Your PHP Version

Many website platforms require the backbone development of PHP. Like other forms of programming, this is one of those platforms that is in constant development. As a result, you need to know how to update or otherwise change your version of PHP.

Keeping software up-to-date is just one of many ways to keep your site protected. It also ensures you’re benefiting from the latest technology and practices when developing a website. Which PHP version you use will dictate this level of security as well as compatibility with other online apps.

At GreenGeeks, you have the option to choose the PHP version in cPanel to fit your needs. Today, I am going to show you how to use this tool from your cPanel.

Using the PHP Version Function

From cPanel, scroll down to the “Software” section and click “Select PHP Version.”

Select PHP Version

Use the drop down selector to choose which version to use.

Choose Version

Click the “Set as current” button to commit to the change.

Set As Current PHP

You’ll also notice you can enable and disable various aspects of PHP using the check boxes available. However, I suggest keeping these set as default unless you are 100 percent sure you know what you’re doing. Disabling or enabling the wrong function may inadvertently cripple your website.

Why would you use older versions of PHP instead of a new one?

One of the most common issues when switching PHP versions is compatibility. Some platforms require certain aspects of an older PHP version to operate because new changes may not be compatible. This gives developers time to make adjustments before upgrading to a new version of PHP.

The last thing you want is an automatic update to PHP and it stops your website from working correctly.

Should you always keep PHP updated to the newest version?

Most developers probably don’t need to worry about compatibility issues. For example, running a basic blog may not be directly affected by requiring older versions of the software. However, you should take the time and test your site to make sure the newest version won’t break it.

Promoting Safety and Security

Even though old versions of software are often compatible with the functionality of your site, it doesn’t mean it’s a good practice to keep the obsolete version running. In fact, old stable versions of software can have exploits you don’t know about. Eventually, old versions are no longer supported by fixes and upgrades. From PHP to new versions of WordPress, it’s safer to keep everything as current as possible.

For more information regarding software updates, contact customer support. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Increased Performance & Reliability

What a summer! Upgrades galore!

One of the unique things about GreenGeeks web hosting is that we’re always looking for ways to provide our customers with the best possible hosting experience. This is what sets us apart from the competition. I’ve worked at other hosting providers where there were no advancements. It was boring and it really affected the customers’ chance of succeeding online. Not at GreenGeeks though, we’re always hungry for more. We’re always testing new hardware, new software, new security tools, etc. Anything that would benefit our customers. Continue reading “Increased Performance & Reliability”
