U.S. Wind Energy Installations Booming!

“… nothing can stop the U.S. wind power industry.”

So far this year, the U.S. has installed 5,800 megawatts of wind power—again, more than at the same time last year (4,200 megawatts). U.S. EPA Recognizes GreenGeeks Green Efforts

Earlier last week, GreenGeeks announced that it had been recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for its green efforts!

Here’s the press release that was sent out:

Santa Monica, CA. September 23, 2009 –  GreenGeeks, LLC today announced its purchase of green power and its partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership.  GreenGeeks, LLC is purchasing more than 48,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough green power to meet  300 percent of the organizations purchased electricity use.  GreenGeeks, LLC is buying renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a leading national supplier of green power products.

“This is a huge honor and we are proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” said Trey Gardner, GreenGeeks CEO  “We’ve always been diligent and we’ve worked hard to make GreenGeeks the most eco friendly company we could be. When the EPA contacted us we were pleased to find out that companies like ours could get the support of the EPA through their Green Power Partner Program. We look forward to working with the EPA and their Program to further the cause for more companies to go green.”

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro.  These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources.  Green power purchases also support the development of new renewable energy generation sources nationwide.

“EPA is pleased to welcome GreenGeeks to the Green Power Partnership. We applaud their commitment to using green power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Kathleen Hogan, Director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at EPA.

According to the U.S. EPA, Green Geek’s green power purchase of more than 48,000 (kWh) is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 6 passenger vehicles per year, or is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power more than 5 average American homes annually.

24/7/365, every 10 seconds monitoring

Server uptime is something we here at GreenGeeks take very seriously. A little too serious, and its proven to be very good for us and our customers. We guarantee that we’ll be up 99.9% of the time, however we’re always working around the clock to make sure it’s even better then that. A lot of work goes into making sure of that, including unique proprietary tools that puts us further ahead from our competitors.

“The other guys…”

Many web hosting companies check their servers 1, 3, 15 or even as high as 30 minute intervals to ensure their servers are responding. If you stop to think about it, with check intervals as low as a minute, sites could be down and the hosting company would not know for 60 seconds, only then would they be  notified to begin resolving the issue. An entire minute is pretty long these days. I’ve even seen some hosting companies have internal (on-network) monitoring and I don’t have to go into detail why that’s not smart. I’ve seen a lot of questionable methods and that’s why we strongly believe that experience goes a long way.

“10 Second check intervals and not 1 minute.”

At GreenGeeks, we monitor our servers every 10 seconds from multiple locations around the globe to ensure that we’re up and running. We also run health checks, to make sure FTP, HTTPD, MySQL and other critical services are running and functioning properly. If in the event there is a service failure (it does happen), our 24/7/365 NOC is notified and action is taken immediately to isolate and resolve. From what we have seen, in most cases, issues are isolated and resolved within 30-40 seconds, whereas the competition still hasn’t even realized they are having issues.

This is one of the many reasons, why hosting with GreenGeeks is simply a smart choice! It’s also made it very easy on the staff to be able to continue to provide customer support versus having to deal with “downtime complaints”.

See (stage) your website before switching your DNS

When customers are looking to switch hosting providers, they usually stage the setup of their web site before completely switching the DNS (domain name servers). We provide you with a temporary URL so that you can see how your site will look before you switch your domain’s DNS. The problem comes when some scripts require you to access the script through a valid domain name. This poses an issue because you haven’t switched the domain’s DNS and don’t want to until you know the script works 100%.

Here is an easy work around:

1) Upload your site / databases, etc to your new web hosting account with GreenGeeks

2) Locate your hosts file on your computer (On Windows XP, it’s located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS) and add the following line at the end of the file:

IP_ADDRESS    www.yourdomain.com yourdomain.com

Obviously change the IP_ADDRESS and yourdomain.com to the appropriate values. The IP_ADDRESS can be found in your welcome e-mail and also inside of your cPanel account.

3) Hit save, close all your browsers. That’s it.

Now when you load your web site from your computer, you will be able to see your site as if the DNS was pointed to our servers. You can fully stage the setup and ensure all components of your site are in working order. The rest of the world will still be loading from your actual server (since you did not change the domain’s DNS).  You can remove the line in the hosts file whenever you’re done staging and your computer will reference your ISP DNS servers as usual.
