Nextcloud VPS Hosting
Keep your files and calendars on your own server instead of a provider's shared cloud. Nextcloud hosting from GreenGeeks costs the same however many people you add, and the server stays patched for you.

Every GreenGeeks VPS comes with AlmaLinux 9, Apache 2.4, PHP 8.4 and MariaDB 11.4. Nextcloud's manual install runs on all of them, so there's nothing to replace.
Each plan includes 75 to 250 GB of SSD storage. When that fills, the External Storage app adds Amazon S3, SFTP or WebDAV storage as folders in Nextcloud.
Nextcloud's server is open source under the AGPL, so a manual install has no per-user license and no limit on users. You create the users and groups and give each person a storage limit.
Set up Redis for file locking and memory caching, and syncing stays quick as more people and devices connect.
The user counts come from third-party sizing tests, so treat them as a starting point. You can move up a plan later with an online upgrade by support ticket.

| Comparing a VPS with Drive and shared hosting | GreenGeeks VPS | Shared hosting | Google Drive-style cloud storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where data lives | Your VPS, full disk access | The host's shared server | The vendor's cloud, under its terms |
| Install | You install it, and GreenGeeks patches the system | Web installer only, no root access | Nothing to install |
| Storage limit | 75 to 250 GB SSD, plus S3 or SFTP | The host's quota | Set by your plan |
| Price per added user | None, on a flat $69.95 to $179.95 a month | Cheap, but capped by PHP limits | Per user, per month |
| Extra apps | Apps from the Nextcloud store that need only PHP | Limited by PHP modules and cron | The vendor's integrations only |
A GreenGeeks VPS gives Nextcloud room to grow at a flat price. Drive-style storage fits people who don't want to run a server, and shared hosting works for a one-user trial.
Everything you need to know about hosting Nextcloud on GreenGeeks VPS.
Nextcloud hosting on a VPS means running Nextcloud on your own server, so you pay for the server instead of for each user. Nextcloud is free, AGPL-licensed software for file sync, sharing, calendars and contacts. The free desktop and mobile apps connect to that server. On GreenGeeks, it runs on a VPS with Apache, PHP 8.4 and MariaDB 11.4, full root access and a dedicated IP. You decide which apps to add and how much storage each person gets. You handle updates and backups, and GreenGeeks' managed team looks after the server itself.
Nextcloud needs a 64-bit Linux server, PHP 8.3 or newer, a database and a web server. The current manual supports RHEL 9, and AlmaLinux 9 is built to match it. It also supports PHP 8.3 to 8.5, MariaDB 11.4 and Apache 2.4. GreenGeeks VPS runs AlmaLinux 9 with Apache 2.4, PHP up to 8.4 and MariaDB 11.4 by default, so everything matches. The manual gives memory only per PHP process, at least 128 MB with 512 MB recommended. You'll also need a domain name pointed at the server.
A GreenGeeks VPS for Nextcloud is $69.95 a month on 4 GB, $129.95 on 8 GB or $179.95 on 16 GB, whatever the number of users. Every plan includes a dedicated IP, which is where your Nextcloud domain points. The Nextcloud server is open source under the AGPL, so a manual install carries no per-user fee and no user cap. The free 100-user limit applies only to the Docker All-in-One install, which GreenGeeks VPS can't run. An Enterprise subscription is optional. Storage is the cost that keeps growing, so plan early for S3 or SFTP.
Yes, through the External Storage app on a running server, or as primary storage if you set it up at install. External Storage mounts Amazon S3, SFTP, WebDAV and other storage as folders inside Nextcloud. Primary object storage keeps all your files in an S3-compatible bucket. Turning it on later makes existing files unreachable, so decide before you add data. GreenGeeks plans include 75 to 250 GB of SSD, so keep the files people use most on the local disk. Remote storage is slower, so use it for overflow and archives, and back up the bucket too.
A Nextcloud backup should include the config, data and custom apps folders, plus the database. External Storage mounts and S3 buckets aren't part of it, so they need backups of their own. Turn on maintenance mode, copy the folders with rsync, and dump the database with mariadb-dump. GreenGeeks doesn't keep VPS backups, so schedule this yourself with cron and copy the result off the server. cPanel's daily backups can also send files and databases to Amazon S3 once you configure them. With S3 as primary storage, restore the bucket and the database together.
For files, sharing, calendars and contacts, yes. The desktop and mobile apps sync folders the way Drive does, and you get version history and share links. The gap on GreenGeeks VPS is editing office documents. Nextcloud Office needs a separate Euro-Office or Collabora server, which usually runs in Docker, so you'd connect to one hosted somewhere else. Nextcloud Talk works for chat, but its high-performance backend, which bigger calls need, also runs in Docker. Drive-style services charge per user. A GreenGeeks VPS has one flat price with no seat fees, and you run the updates.
Size the plan by users and the apps you turn on. As a rough guide from third-party sizing tests, GreenGeeks' 4 GB plan suits 1 to 5 users with files, calendars and contacts. About 10 to 25 users fit the 8 GB plan with Redis and image previews. The 16 GB plan suits up to about 100 users and has room for full-text search. For storage, the plans have 75, 150 and 250 GB of SSD, and the External Storage app can mount Amazon S3, SFTP or WebDAV once that fills.
No, because All-in-One runs in Docker, and GreenGeeks VPS doesn't offer Docker. The snap package isn't an option either, since it's built for Ubuntu. On GreenGeeks, you install Nextcloud manually. Download the archive from nextcloud.com, check its checksum, and extract it into a site folder on Apache. Create a MariaDB database with the utf8mb4 character set, then run the web installer at your domain. After that, set up Redis for file locking and a system cron job for cron.php every 5 minutes. A manual install takes the most work, and it gives you full control.
You move the folders and the database, and keep the same Nextcloud version. Put the old server in maintenance mode, then copy the config folder, the data folder and any custom apps, and dump the database with mariadb-dump. Restore them on the GreenGeeks VPS, running the same Nextcloud version. Then run occ files:scan --all and occ maintenance:repair to fix any mismatch between the files and the database. If Nextcloud is in a cPanel account today, GreenGeeks' migration team moves cPanel accounts for free instead. An All-in-One install needs AIO's own migration steps first.
GreenGeeks manages the server, and keeping Nextcloud up to date is your job. GreenGeeks' 24/7 managed support covers the server, including real-time intrusion detection, but not Nextcloud or its apps. Nextcloud released three Hub versions in 2026, and Hub 25 Autumn no longer gets security fixes, so staying on a supported release matters. The built-in updater needs at least 256 MB of PHP memory. You'll also add users, set their quotas, watch disk space and test a restore now and then. If you added full-text search, keep an eye on that too.
GreenGeeks' migration team moves cPanel accounts for free, including one with a Nextcloud site in it.
