WordCamp Salt Lake City 2019

WordCamp Salt Lake 2019

On October 12, 2019, get ready for some WordPress awesomeness at WordCamp Salt Lake City 2019! It’s held at the Impact Hub in SLC from 9 am to 5 pm, and GreenGeeks is sponsoring. And although we won’t be there in person, it’s sure to be a great experience.

Being originally from Utah myself, I’m a bit sad that I won’t be there in person. However, that shouldn’t stop you from experiencing all of the great talks that are lined up.

What to Expect at WordCamp Salt Lake City 2019

In this one-day event, there are some great talks available that everyone should consider attending. And several of them I wish I could sit in on in person. I’ll just have to hope that they’re pushed onto WordCamp TV.

This weekend, you can catch speakers sharing:

  • Hosted or Self-Hosting
In this talk, Mike Adams shares the pros and cons of self hosting, using a hosted WordPress platform and what’s involved with using web host providers.
  • Creating a Problem-Solving Framework for Faster Website Troubleshooting
Anyone who maintains their own WordPress website should want to attend this talk. Ryan Sullivan will go into detail about how to track down and diagnose issues quickly with a solid problem-solving strategy. This is one I would surely love to see.
  • Image Sizing & Optimization For the Web – The Non-Designers Approach
Here is another I would find interesting. Dustin Olsen will provide simple tricks to make your images less of a burden for site speed while using online tools to resize them. This means you can do so without Photoshop!
  • Composer for WordPress Projects
For those who manage the burden of plugin, theme, premium tools and private repositories, Tyrel Kelsey will show you how to maintain all those aspects. This includes ways you can automate the process to help cut the time you spend with routine maintenance.
  • What Marketers Wish Developers Knew
There is often a disconnect between what marketers and developers want on a website. Dustin Nay will teach you how to improve marketing knowledge, communication and ways to engage clients in a more productive manner.

So whether you’re a novice WordPress developer or a seasoned professional, there is something for everyone at WordCamp Salt Lake City 2019.

Fun Facts About Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake is the capital city of Utah, and part of my stomping grounds back in the day. It’s changed a lot over the years and has quite a bit of heritage surrounding the city.

Here is something you might want to know when getting ready to gear up for WordCamp:

  1. Salt Lake City is 4,330 feet above sea level! Which means the oxygen level is somewhat lower than in many cities across the US. So if you’re not used to the elevation, be wary of going for jogs and drinking alcohol.
  2. If you visit the Great Salt Lake, also be wary of the North Shore Monster! This creature is said to have a body of a crocodile and the head of a horse that swims in the lake. However, it hasn’t been spotted since the 1840s, so you should be safe.
  3. Salt Lake City, as well as much of the Wasatch Front, was underwater roughly 30,000 years ago. This is referred to as “Lake Bonneville.” In fact, you can still find shells of water critters along the mountain range in plentiful supply. I remember collecting them when I was a kid.

These are just a handful of fun things about Salt Lake City. Perhaps one of my favorites, though, is how the northern shore of the Great Salt Lake has about the same salt content as the Dead Sea.

This means you’ll float quite easily as the lake is about 10-times saltier than ocean water. Just don’t drink it.

Have a Great Time at WordCamp Salt Lake City 2019!

As I said, GreenGeeks is only sponsoring this WordCamp and will not be there in person. But that shouldn’t stop you from exploring everything the event has to offer.

And I would like to thank everyone involved in making WordCamp Salt Lake a reality. The sponsors, organizers, volunteers and attendees are what make this such a great community.

Have a safe and eventful weekend, Utah!
